Quill Drive Motor Mount

Last stage of the journey on the Quill Drive is the servo motor mounting.  This wound up being fairly easy and neat.

 

Motor mount was machined from a piece of scrap 3x5  1/4"Aluminum channel.

The four mounting holes in the lower right bolt to a thick cover plate I made for the gear selector (now removed) on the side of the head.

The top is slotted for the NEMA 34 servo motor I used.

I elected to remove as little material from the box mount as possible for rigidity, so I laser cut this spacer to raise the servo motor high enough that the spigot on the front cleared.

The laser is proving to be an extremely useful tool in the shop.

Upper and lower brackets.  Upper (LH) has not been drilled for the ball screw bearing block at this time.

The block bolted to the end of the upper bracket will be bolted to the side of the motor mount box.

 

 

 

Bracket after installation and mounting holes for the upper ball screw bearing block have been added.

Bracket is held to the mill head by the bolt sticking up which clamps it tightly to the boss sticking out from the head casting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

An Allen bolt secures the end of the bracket to the motor mount box to tie is all together and increase the rigidity.

 

The large hole allow access to the bolt that holds the head casting to the ram casting.  I did NOT want to take stuff apart to tram the head!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A plate was made for the front of the motor box with a two fold purpose.  To stiffen the mount and more importantly to have a readily accessible place to put the Panic Switch.
